In July 2006, Malick Sidibé opened the doors of a photographic studio for three weeks in the premises of the former perception of a commune in Brittany. The layout is like the one the photographer opened in 1962 in Bamako. A few chairs, an armchair in which Malick devotes himself to reading local newspapers between two posing sessions, two projectors located on each side of the fabric which serves as a background and, on his tripod, the photographer's Rollei. The first day is calm, the crowd is not crowded. In the region, the last studios have closed for several years now. The few people who come through the door are intimidated and almost apologetically ask if they can watch to see how the posing session goes. But very quickly after a few exchanges with Malick, the atmosphere changes radically. Shyness gives way to curiosity and good-naturedness. The session, as always with Malick, is quick. In a few words and a few tips on how to position his body, he takes the model into this jubilant universe, palpable in his portraits. Word of mouth works and, after three weeks, people have to be turned away. Postwoman, baker, firefighter, veteran, ball host, swimmer, banker... kindly took part in the game. Young or old, mixed social classes, residents or passing through for vacation, individually or as a family, everyone comes together to, in the end, compose the portrait of a community in its diversity and complexity.
