“Beyond a refuge, the house is also the place of intimacy, the territory sheltered from public space. Momentos e Máculas is a personal quest on this relationship between the intimate space and the public space in which it takes place, and, here, more specifically that of Guarulhos, a city in Brazil where I grew up. Faced with frenzied urbanization, dozens of buildings rise from the ground every month, the face of this city is profoundly changing. My interest does not lie in the geopolitical consequences of this phenomenon, but focuses on the cultural, sociological and human impacts of this transformation. During my many stays in Guarulhos, my own feeling towards this territory which is familiar to me, and even more so towards the apartment where I grew up, has changed. With each trip, I was able to see how all these upheavals influenced my perception of these spaces and my own family. The disappearance of old dwellings in favor of new buildings built on former leisure sites, on parks, the confinement of residents in these new constructions, all of this has changed my approach to these places. Through this book, I tried to account for this overlap between the past and the present. The model, built around pages in different formats, and in which each image relates to several others at the same time, sometimes hiding them, sometimes revealing them, creates an architecture where the overlaps, of differentiated surfaces, symbolize this juxtaposition between a world which disappears and a world which is born. » Diego Saldiva

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
