Invited by the GwinZegal Art Center, English photographer Mark Neville chose to take the supporters of the En Avant de Guingamp football club as the starting point for his project, to then paint a much broader portrait of the inhabitants of Guingamp and the surrounding area. His work reveals to us a society full of incredible diversity and richness. If it is imbued with a very English documentary concern, as close as possible to the roughness of the world, it also reveals a great subjectivity in the choice of its models and the way of representing them. The artist deliberately stages them through a clever play of light, to the point of making us doubt the veracity of the situations and the capacity of photography to represent the world objectively.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
