Afterword by Elfriede Jelinek

More people than you might expect seek out extreme experiences during their winter ski vacations. Not content to simply race down daring slopes with alarming speed and brace the cold, some also choose excessive alcohol consumption, seemingly driven by a desire to reach a state of unconsciousness. The winter seasons in the Austrian Alps between 2006 and 2023 documented by Lois Hechenblaikner in this book are certainly no exception, with the unrelenting tourism machine of superficial entertainment and standardized alcohol infusion showing no signs of abating. Following Hechenblaikner’s books Ischgl (2020) and Intensiven, also released this season, Sober Viewed (“viewed sober”) presents photographs not only in Ischgl, but in Obertauern, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Kitzbühel, Zillertal, Ötztal and especially in St. Anton am Arlberg—taking us up close and personal to the dark zones of an otherworldly Alpine reality.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
