“No more Easter greetings!” — so it sometimes reads on the index cards of the Grand Hotel Waldhaus in Vulpera, for not every guest was wanted back. Concierge and receptionist stoically endured the boorish behaviour of the illustrious and wealthy clientele, but noted their experiences on the cards. Guests were discreetly observed, telephone calls overheard, appropriate and inappropriate conduct commented upon. In the interwar period and especially during the Second World War, the Waldhaus was a place where the upheavals of an era torn apart were mirrored in miniature.
