Another Royal Residence is the intriguing title Karl Lagerfeld gave to this collection of 14 photos—but which residence is he referring to? Lagerfeld focuses on architectural and landscape details—balustrades, steps, sculptures and urns; palms, hedges, paths and ponds—many of which in bold, almost abstract croppings that themselves do not declare a specific location. Only two images help to solve this riddle: in them a fragment of a glorious facade peaks over a wall as it is almost engulfed by a cloud-filled sky—the facade of none less than the Palace of Versailles.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
