Mythology is Karl Lagerfeld’s 2011 calendar for Pirelli. Recreating the classic calendar as only Lagerfeld could, in 36 black-and-white images he chooses 15 female and 5 male models as modern incarnations of ancient Greek goddesses and gods. With models including Bianca Balti, Julianne Moore, Baptiste Giabiconi and Freja Beha Erichsen, Lagerfeld recasts figures including Hera, Hermes and Ares as sleek, sensual and futuristic figures, printed in silvery tones by Gerhard Steidl. Says Lagerfeld says of his interest in these figures: “It’s my favorite religion: one god for every occasion. I’m a polytheist: all present-day religions are recent, but I prefer […] mythology, which does without hell, without sin (an obstacle to happiness), and without forgiveness. We need to return to the disciplined form of beauty of antiquity.”

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
