"In September 2012 I crossed the ocean, landing in an unknown land. Leaving behind family, friends and the comfort of my home, I left Singapore to start a new life in the United Kingdom. For me it was a time of great personal growth, as I committed myself to integrating into a foreign culture and finding my place in the world."

This series uses the anonymity, geometry and visual language and formal grammar typical of street photography to evoke the sense of disorientation and uncertainty that the author felt in those years. The title Journey to the West refers to the Chinese myth of the Ming dynasty, which tells of the journey of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang to the "Western Regions" to obtain the sacred texts of Buddhism.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
