Catherine DeLattre has developed a photographic practice characterized by silent observation, profound stillness and what can be defined as "empathic neutrality". Parallel to her career as a cinematographic still photographer, she has built a research focused on vernacular subjects: barns, cars, houses and elements of the rural landscape along the roads. His images portray these places without any emphasis or glorification, inviting the observer to grasp their emotional dimension through an attentive gaze and an awareness of the passing of time. Originally from Pennsylvania, DeLattre approached photography while studying archeology at Kent State University, where a compulsory course led her to dedicate herself with greater conviction to the photographic medium. He then continued his education at Purdue University, moving from black and white to color under the influence of authors such as William Eggleston and Stephen Shore. After teaching in Maine and New York State, in 1979 he moved to New York City, where he worked at the International Center of Photography and photographed urban everyday life with the same observational approach. Today, dividing her time between New York City and the Pennsylvania countryside, Catherine DeLattre documents landscapes shaped by human presence. While sharing a certain formal essentiality and rigorous sobriety of gaze with the New Topographics movement, his work distances itself from it due to the absence of analytical detachment, proposing instead a profoundly humanist and empathetic relationship with places and a subtle reflection on the sense of belonging.
