Lars Tunbjörk (1956–2015) chronicled Sweden like no one else. His gaze, acute and profoundly human, observed the country from the perspective of the province, starting from Borås, the town in southern Sweden. Through his images he gave back to Swedes what had become invisible: a portrait of themselves and the society in which they lived. His research then brought him onto the international scene, and his photographs entered the collective imagination, giving life to a work that is at once a story, a document and a great photograph. For Landet utom sig (Country Beyond Itself), the project that marked a decisive turning point in his career, Tunbjörk photographed people in campsites, shopping centers and department stores, chronicling the emergence of the market economy in Sweden: a transformation that in the 1990s would redefine not only the country, but the entire world. With a medium format camera and a home-made flash, he created images that were both surreal and everyday, shot through with subtle humor and profound melancholy. His visual language has become so recognizable that “Tunbjörk-style” is now an expression that has entered the lexicon of photography. This new edition of the volume, published for the first time in 1993 by the Swedish publisher Journal, features the original photographs and texts in their entirety, enriched by a new preface by Lena Kvist and an updated essay by Göran Greider.
