Text by Sandrine Cressant

This work brings together some of the images created by Lise Gaudaire, first during a creative residency at Métive in Creuse, then as part of a mission residency in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine at the invitation of Carré d'Art, the photography gallery of the Pôle Sud cultural center in Chartres-de-Bretagne. Just as she sought to draw up a portrait of the farmers with whom she had numerous discussions, Lise Gaudaire wanted to question the link that unites the farmer to the landscape. The result is a visual ensemble which, beyond its sensitive dimension, seems to be as much akin to an anthropological approach as to an archeology of the landscape. In addition to the photographs of Lise Gaudaire, this book collects and brings together several interviews which combine the points of view of the farmers photographed and those of actors from the rural world, whether they are representatives of the profession or teachers and researchers in planning.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
