We know about African influences in Brazil and the Caribbean, but what do we know about the presence of black populations in the Andean part of the South American continent?
Africa-America is a journey built around photographic portraits which question the contemporary traces of Africanness among the black diasporas of the Andes. Indeed, from the 16th century, the plantation economy in Spanish America developed on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts with the massive importation of slaves from the African coasts. Today, these black, “Afro-descendant” populations are experiencing a historic turning point, publicly expressing their plural cultures, an original syncretism between indigenous influences, Spanish colonization and African roots with the affirmed desire to find their place in states where they remain largely a minority. to varying degrees, they are all in search of their African roots of which they know little or nothing.
