Within contemporary Swiss photography, the work of Zürich-based Cécile Wick counts among the established points of reference. After KopfFall, a collection of dreamily darkened black-and-white pinhole-camera shots of heads, islands and waterfalls published by Edition Patrick Frey in 1996, with America Wick confines herself entirely to the theme of the vast elemental landscape — for the first time, however, in digitally post-processed colour. During a study residency at the University of California she travels by train across the American continent, photographing the passing panoramas from the same unspectacular angle, from a perspective that yields itself to the spectacle of the plains, horizons and skies.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
