Dresses made of masonry, makeup-brush feet, dog or bird heads, monstrous eyes and hands, doughnut lips, swim fins, and accessories made from tanker trucks or muffins. Klaudia Schifferle created her paperdolls from material she cut out of journals and magazines and reassembled on A4 sheets. The collages are colourful and cheeky, sometimes cute, often malicious. Made between 2011 and 2016, some of the pictures were also meticulously copied in oil. By creating the figures from found image elements, the paperdolls take on a double value: they tell of our age and its things while opening up our perception, recalling feelings and moments. Cut-out paper dolls existed already in ancient Chinese burial rites and as katashiro figures in Japanese healing rituals; in Europe they became a popular pastime, and in the USA the paper doll had its golden age after the Great Depression. The strong reference to reality in paperdolls is also reflected in the collage technique, closely bound up with the emergence of artistic modernism.
