What can the natural sciences contribute to today's understanding of embodiment in the humanities and social sciences? And to what extent does neuroscientific research in particular foster new theories of mind and body? Feminists have long accused neuroscience of biological reductionism, but as Elizabeth A. Wilson argues, neurological theories — and especially relevant descriptions of depression, sexuality and the emotions — are genuinely useful for feminist theories of the body. Rather than relying on neuroscience's tendency to fix the established, Wilson emphasizes its potential for reinvention and transformation. Examining neural connections, subcortical pathways and reflex action, she concludes that the central and autonomic nervous systems are powerfully bound up with sexuality, affects, moods and cognitive preferences, as well as with other organs and bodies.
