SPOOR by Roger Palmer brings together photographs made in southern Africa, including in and around Cape Town and across the wider South African landscape. The images dwell on traces—on what humans, animals and time leave behind in a place: marks on the land, vernacular signage, makeshift structures, weathered surfaces, the borders between settled and wild ground. The Afrikaans-derived word 'spoor' refers to the track or trail of an animal, and Palmer adopts it as a method as much as a title: his pictures move through urban edges and rural margins, attending to small visual evidences of presence, departure and adjacent histories rather than to grand statements. The book includes a conversation between Palmer and the South African writer Ivan Vladislavić, which situates the work within a long British and Commonwealth photographic engagement with southern Africa, and questions the position of the artist as observer of a landscape shaped by colonial history, displacement and post-apartheid transition.
