In his first photography book, Soi 1, the Japanese photographer Kotaro Yokomizo creates a visual chronicle of the city of his heart, Chiang Mai, in Thailand. Walking every day through the many soi (a Thai word for small streets) of Chiang Mai, Yokomizo uses his camera to capture the atmospheres, the oddities, the textures, the contrasts and the scenes of Chiang Mai. His photographs are the testimony of a time and a place, of the singularity of the city but also of its similarities with other places. The photographer is interested in the distance between things, in human nature, but also in the scars left by history.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
