To photograph the night means freeing oneself from two prejudices. First, one must remember that night does not act as an intermittent blinding programme that deprives everyone of sight; on the contrary, it possesses its own luminosity. Otherwise it would be impossible to carry out the very operation that gives photography its name: to write with light.
