For over twenty years Osamu Kanemura insisted on silver-gelatin film, shooting the blocks of the city in monochrome and earning high regard at home and abroad for work pinned across gallery walls without regard for underexposure, blown highlights, uneven development, scratches and dust. In 2013 he took up his first digital camera, a Ricoh GR, and began shooting digitally in earnest alongside film, thrusting the camera at the world as if possessed, like a patient with an obsessive disorder repeating the same act. In an age when vast numbers of pictures are taken on phones and compacts, he asks where the hope of photography can be; from tens of thousands of frames shot in a single year, 158 are selected here with a ten-thousand-character text, his first digital colour photobook.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
