How can a single line drawn on a map change the fate of so many people? North Korea and South Korea, one people who not long ago lived as one nation, now lead completely separate realities on opposite sides of the military boundary known as the 38th Parallel. border | korea juxtaposes the two countries in paired photographs: students' uniforms, soldiers facing one another across the line, the buses and subways people ride, the umbrellas they raise in the rain. Separated by only 190 kilometres, Seoul and Pyongyang each go about their daily lives, and the babies born into these two worlds grow up with the values impressed on them by their distinct ways of life.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
