Houescape is a portmanteau of 'house' and 'scape' that also carries the sound of 'how escape?', a body of work looking at Japanese houses and landscapes from a contemporary viewpoint. By cutting natural scenery and old townscapes and leaving blank spaces, the images gain contrast and evoke new readings; the combined fragments first appear as hard geometric designs, then reveal a wholly different impression once recognised as old farmhouses, merchant houses and farms. In Japan's wooden houses, which withstand the weathering of time, the folklore and customs cultivated by earlier generations are unconsciously inscribed.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
