Since his student days, Yuta Niwa has created works with motief such as the giant salamander and the catfish, focusing on the history of infectious diseases, earthquakes and other disasters. Niwa's works do not express the seriousness of the theme as it is, but depict it with humour and riduculousness, like ukiyo-e catfish prints.

"This collection of paintings is a compilation of about five years of my post-graduate work. I am once again reminded that Ko;yo-in, where I spent most of that time, is a very important part of my creative process. First, in 221, I held my first solo exhibition in Kyoto, Namazu no Komyo , at Komyo-in which was a major turning point for me. This solo exhibition combined past works up to my postgraduate years with new works, and was a valuable opportunity for me to reaffirm my previous approach to Japanese art."
