Introduction by Markus Schaden

A hybrid between analogue and digital: the viewer can — or must — reverse the printed negative colour photographs with a smartphone, becoming a developer in their own digital darkroom. The theme is politically explosive: images, still taboo in China, of the 1989 protests on Tiananmen Square in Beijing. As Markus Schaden, founder of the Photobook Museum, writes, it is an outstanding concept by the Chinese photographer that shows how the photobook has arrived in the new decade.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
