The Light of Day by Tony O'Shea is a major Irish monograph from RRB Photobooks. O'Shea is one of the leading documentary photographers of his generation in Ireland, with a body of work spanning more than four decades, characterised by closeness to his subjects, an acute sense of the social, and a quiet, unhurried camera. The Light of Day gathers a long-form selection of his work, ranging across Irish hunts, pubs, fairs, ferries, religious processions, country roads, kitchen tables and street corners, presented in O'Shea's classic black-and-white. As in his later Kingdom of Hounds (also published by RRB), there is a strong sense of land, weather and ritual; humans, animals and the landscape they share inhabit the frames with equal weight. The book is in the lineage of the Irish documentary tradition that includes Tony Murray, Mike Bunn, and the photographers around Source magazine, and represents one of the most generous overviews of O'Shea's work available.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
