Follow-up to Stories: Pictures from the Archive
Designed and produced to coincide with renewed international interest in Barnor's archive
Features the iconic Roadmaker portrait and surrounding images of Ghanaian work and labour

The Roadmaker is the second RRB title with Ghanaian photographer James Barnor, following Stories: Pictures from the Archive, and gathers a focused selection of Barnor's images of work and labour in Ghana from the years around independence. The title image—an iconic portrait of a roadworker breaking stones by hand under the sun—has become one of Barnor's most reproduced photographs; the book opens it out into a larger project on the people who built, maintained and inhabited the new infrastructure of post-colonial Ghana: roads, market stalls, train lines, town centres, port edges, civil-service offices. As with the rest of Barnor's archive, the work moves between assignment, press commission and personal initiative; the photographs are made with the dignity and care that characterised his studio work in Accra and his later press and fashion work in London. The Roadmaker is at once a single-image study and a small monograph, holding the famous picture in its proper context and quietly enlarging it.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
