Published in parallel with the exhibition James Barnor, the Portfolio — 100 photographs at LUMA Foundation, Arles

Stories: Pictures from the Archive offers a kaleidoscopic overview of the Ghanaian photographer James Barnor's oeuvre. Published in parallel with the exhibition James Barnor, the Portfolio—100 photographs spanning the end of the colonial era to the early eighties—presented at the LUMA Foundation in Arles as part of the Rencontres d'Arles festival, the book moves from Accra to London and back again. It gathers studio portraits, press commissions and personal images, allowing the reader insight into both the process behind Barnor's best-known photographs and the more intimate aspects of an exceptional archive built over decades. The exhibition the book accompanies was the first retrospective in France devoted to Barnor, who continues, well into his nineties, to inspire new generations of contemporary artists and whose work is now held in the most prestigious international collections. This is RRB's second title with Barnor, and a substantial introduction to a body of work that documents the cultural and political transformations of Ghana through independence, the African diaspora in London, and the wider visual culture of the second half of the twentieth century.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
