Town to Town is photographer Niall McDiarmid's second book of street portraits made across Britain, following his earlier self-published Crossing Paths and Via Vauxhall. McDiarmid travelled to towns and cities up and down the country to make environmental portraits of the people who happened to be passing on the street—locals out shopping, schoolkids, young couples, older men in pubs, women coming back from work—against the often striking colour and texture of their own home streets. The book offers a unique portrait of Britain through these encounters and their backgrounds: each town has its distinct character, given by the people who walk its streets. Made in a period of considerable social change in the country, Town to Town is a quiet, generous record of how a place can be photographed not from above but from the sidewalk—pavement by pavement, person by person, doorway by doorway—and how a body of work in this register can be assembled into a portrait of a national mood.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
