Belfast is the third Northern Irish book by Danish photographer Krass Clement, following his celebrated Drum (made in a single evening in a pub in County Monaghan in 1991) and Dublin (RRB Photobooks, 2017). After his work in the Republic of Ireland, Clement travelled north to Belfast, then still in the late phase of the Troubles, and photographed there over several weeks using the same approach he had used elsewhere: moving through the city as a quiet visitor and observer, working as unobtrusively as possible, accumulating images of faces and landscapes—children going to school, shopfronts, the windows of private homes, the moments of open space between buildings, the small details of a city under tension. Clement is best known for the brooding, melancholic quality of his black-and-white work and for his commitment to the photobook as his preferred form; Belfast continues that practice, offering a particular Danish view of a Northern Irish city in a particular hinge moment of its history.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
