Poetry by Shaniqua Benjamin (first Croydon Poet Laureate)

Crocus Valley by Ameena Rojee is a quiet love letter to Croydon, the South London borough where the photographer grew up. The book is the second in RRB's Platform series, a publishing project supporting emerging voices in British documentary photography. Rojee sets out to show another side of Croydon—a softer side that coexists with the hard truths often used to characterise the borough in the media, a story that champions Croydon's rich natural heritage and the small, sustaining green spaces that thread through it. She began making the images on her daily commute between her family home and her job in central London with the British Journal of Photography, and gradually built a project exploring the boundaries of the borough: the urban edge that gives onto fields and rough ground, the parks where butterflies appear in midsummer, the horses at the foot of Duppas Hill. The book pairs her colour photographs with nostalgic poetry by Croydon's first Poet Laureate, Shaniqua Benjamin, in a romantic view of a cultural and generational patchwork quilt of a place that is supposedly empty of such romance.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
