Several prostitutes can be found along the Paulese highway connecting the cities of Milan and Cremona, in the north of Italy. Some of them have equipped themselves with chairs, which are chained to the road signs to avoid being stolen. “The Absence” is a study on one of these chairs. Used mainly in the late afternoon and at night, the chair is “abandoned” during the day. I photographed this chair for about a year, every day, early in the morning or in the early afternoon, in the exact position where the prostitute left it.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
