This work was born from watching a film Hollywood, Vermont in which the protagonist, looking at a typical American house with a porch equipped with a swing, exclaims “What a beautiful house, only a nice person could live in a house like this”. I then realized that it would be possible to take portraits of people without ever meeting the subjects, without talking to them, in practice without ever relating directly to the person I wanted to photograph. By observing homes from the outside carefully and at the right distance, you can recognize the character, lifestyle, and interests of those who live there. Sometimes the things that belong to us, the clothes we wear, and the places we live in speak about us much more than words. Photography allows us to get to know others by entering their homes without ever crossing the threshold and without knocking. The title of the book is taken from a song made famous by Elvis Presley.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
