The Po valley, the geographical area of northern Italy that coincides with the river basin, is one of the most polluted places on the planet. Because of poor ventilation, heavy industry and a high population density of about twenty million inhabitants, smog and air pollution have increased greatly since the 1960s, and they affect not only the large cities and the industrial districts.
