Housing blocks and buildings echoing modernist styles. Crumbling facades, architectural and object-like absurdities. Walls with graffiti, ruins, vegetation. In between improvised small architectures, providing shelter for street cats. Stephanie Seufert‘s “Periphery Constellations” is a foray through the fraying outskirts of the Sicilian metropolis Palermo, which was created within a few weeks as part of her residency in spring 2025. The artist´s interest lies in the undefined periphery. In analogue small and medium format photographs, partly in color, partly in black and white, she focuses her precise gaze on the shape and texture of residential districts and in-between zones. Based on fragments of urban space, Seufert forms photographic pictorial spaces that condense into an essay in which time stands strangely still despite pictorial dynamics. No people around, the suburban landscape seems to belong to the cats. While they are able to slip through its open, sometimes crumbling fabric, the inhabitants sooner or later come up against its walls.
