The ancient wisdom of the Indian Vedas tells that the goddess Maya, after creating the world, enveloped it in a veil to prevent men from accessing the true nature of reality. Maya is therefore the veil of illusion that obscures men’s vision and hides, or at least alters, the perception of the world in which we live. In India, you only need to walk through the streets and stop to observe what is happening to get the distinct feeling that everything seems to take place on an imaginary, unreal or even grotesque plane, to the point of wondering whether what is happening before your eyes is not really the result of an illusion. And the illusion is everywhere! It is in the incredible tricks of the fakirs, in the potholed roads, in the obsessive sounds of car horns, as well as in the men sleeping at street corners, in the mothers begging for milk for their children, in the stray dogs wandering aimlessly, in the old people with their hands constantly outstretched for a few coins, in the festering stumps of lepers.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
