Taking photos of naked women perhaps means seeking a liberation from the image of the naked woman who haunts every male, every man. These photos are of women, of young half naked women, not completely naked, in composed poses, like a photographic portrait, a beautiful photographic portrait, sometimes slightly erotic, sometimes slightly seductive, but mainly, they look more like statues than living bodies-art nudes, it should be said. They are almost silent bodies, which have held their breath for a while and then come alive, become flesh, within the folded posters. Embodied in paper manifestos, these images become popular, relaxed. The shadows of the shutters, the classical shades, the interiors with nice floors, the composed poses become “posterized”, become manifestos themselves – and show themselves in a freer, bolder way, thanks to the poster.

We are modern, where a good color photo of a woman’s body, an art nude, posing, looking at you, is printed on a folded poster. The choice to tape it to the wall or put it in a frame, under glass, opens up questions that are hard to resolve.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
