Han is a complex Korean emotional concept often described as a mixture of unresolved resentment, grief and sorrow, but it is fundamentally intertwined with latent hope and tenacity. It is not merely sadness but a deep-seated feeling of being wronged by superior agents, such as fate, government, or foreign powers, combined with a sense of helplessness and an enduring hope for justice. Although rather than being solely a state of despair, Han transforms passive suffering into a motivational force, where the deep sense of injustice fuels a quiet determination to overcome hardship and strive for a better future. Through various psychological processes, these emotions evolve into a broader “sentiment” (a general atmosphere). The pictures were taken over twelve years, which made it possible to absorb this feeling and understand it more deeply.
