Ever since my first trip to Iceland, I’ve perceived it as a place that, despite its hostility, made me feel welcome. There is something deeply contradictory yet authentic about this feeling: being without a roof over your head, exposed to the elements, and at the same time feeling protected. It’s as if the emptiness, the rock, the wind, and the light had taken the place of walls. In Iceland, I discovered that you don’t always need a shelter to feel safe — it is enough to truly belong to your surroundings.

Living in isolation in Iceland, where farms and tiny houses stand like solitary sentinels in a sea of ice and lava, is an act of both courage and contemplation. In this landscape, the truth of our human condition is revealed: we are part of a whole, fragile yet extraordinary, on a journey that invites us to live intensely and to recognize the greatness of the present moment. Here, solitude is not absence, but fullness; it is an invitation to explore the depths of the soul and to reconnect with the world around us.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
