Essay by John Jeremiah Sullivan

Snapshots of the Rolling Stones on a 1965 tour through Savannah, Georgia and Clearwater, Florida, discovered nearly fifty years later in an unmarked box at a flea market in Southern California by the musician and art collector Lauren White. The 23 rare candid images of Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Ian Stewart show the band on the brink of global superstardom, relaxed and unguarded, playing YMCA auditoriums and college gymnasiums; a few later snapshots from the same box show them in full rock-star mode. The photographer has never been identified.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
