As part of the 7L Correspondances program, Katrien De Blauwer explored the books and magazines of Karl Lagerfeld's library at 7L and reinterpreted them in a new series of photomontages in which the images serve as both a reference and a mirror. Drawn to the late 1920s and the 1930s, she moved through frozen images of people mid-transformation, bodies compressed into legibility by the camera, and borrowed these figures to tell a story that is, as usual, personal. The title comes from a line in Virginia Woolf's The Waves: agony wrapped in a pocket handkerchief and screwed tight into a ball. Six paper balls, one for each of Woolf's characters, stand in the space, while twenty-nine photomontages trace the arc of the novel, a single day from sunrise to sunset.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
