Peter Granser approaches the theme of insanity through photographs rather than words, opening windows onto a world that is unknown and therefore feared or set aside. Words, the book suggests, come later than the first, purely perceptual way we have of interpreting the world, and they fail when we face a world we think we do not belong to, although it is our own. It is up to viewers to look beneath the surface and set aside the rules of everyday communication to catch the gap between what exists and what we choose to call real.
