Heaven in Clouds is the name of a modern Chinese residential quarter for affluent inhabitants, a name that reads as a promise, a metaphor for setting off for a new, paradisiacal world. Peter Granser confronts urbanisation, the exponential growth of Chinese cities and its effect on their inhabitants and on nature. The big city is the promise of salvation of our day, and in China more than a hundred cities have over a million inhabitants, with dramatic ecological, economic and social consequences. Edited and designed by Jonas Beuchert, the work is split into four books following Kant's four questions: I, What can I know? (essays); II, What should I do? (reportage photographs); III, What may I hope? (night skies); IV, What is man? (video portraits).

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
