The silver gelatin black and white photographs of the early decades are those of the city-surveyor photographer, whose tenacious quest is expressed neither in street photography nor in the urban views that characterise the 1980s. His images present geometric forms drawn from the city, prodigiously silent. Each one bears the effects of a discreet metamorphosis, whose main spring lies in the loss of scale: building gables transmuted into pyramids, chimneys dilated to the size of a building, 1930s mouldings taking on Maya temple accents. The grey tones are remarkably subtle, sustained by the large unified expanses released by his geometric forms. Extract from the preface by Françoise Lonardoni.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
