In 1988, Pierre de Vallombreuse set foot for the first time in this Valley, in the south of Palawan Island, home to the Tau’Batu, or “people of the rocks.” Fascinated by this peaceful indigenous community of hunter‑gatherers, Pierre de Vallombreuse has made repeated trips to the Valley over the past thirty years and has become a privileged witness to the evolution of this people and their environment, gradually affected by progress.

Through a photographic body of work that is as sensitive and poetic as it is ethnographic, Pierre de Vallombreuse allows us to see the daily life of this people of the Valley, in the midst of an idyllic natural setting slowly transformed by modernity and outside influences.

Limited edition of 205 numbered and signed copies, including 25 special artist’s copies.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
