In 1919 in Ciboure, a small village near Biarritz, three men set up a pottery workshop. Their production of vases of Hellenic inspiration lasted only a few years, and they have since been highly sought after for their perfect beauty. These three potters created an idealised image of the ancient world, reinterpreting centuries-old methods of manufacture and redrawing, with art, the erotic or pastoral scenes that belonged to the repertoire of classical Greek vases. A certain innocence and naivety shines through these masterpieces, all based on the illusion of a time so distant. Through these vases Karl Lagerfeld presents a new aspect of the ideal of beauty.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
