In summer 1962 the young photo reporter Robert Lebeck returned to Hamburg from his first big reportage trips to Japan, Africa and the Soviet Union. His photographs impressed so much that an exhibition was organised for him at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe. Titled “Tokio – Moskau – Leopoldville”, it was in September 1962 Lebeck’s first important show. This opulently designed three-volume book is a re-encounter with that exhibition. It contains the 253 pictures that could be seen then, supplemented by further shots from that time. It shows a world that was just changing radically, observed by a wide-awake photographer.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
