Michael Ruetz is the most important picture chronicler of the time around 1968. He recorded the upheaval photographically, always interested in more than the revolting students in lecture halls and on the street. He recorded the political tremor and its consequences not only at its centres but consistently also on the periphery: in the neighbourhood, in East Berlin, among citizens in the street and in the Third World. It is the views of situations and into the faces of people that bring “68” to life in pictures. Like no other photographer Ruetz captured the mood of an era, the political, artistic and intellectual change of climate.
