This volume brings together for the first time the best texts of the American photographer Lewis Baltz. The numerous essays that the artist published between 1974 and 2012 in magazines such as Art in America, The Times Literary Supplement, Camera Austria and L’Architecture d’aujourd’hui give insights into the understanding of art and politics of one of the most important photographers of his generation. Besides observations on Edward Weston and Walker Evans, Baltz analyses the development of American photography since the 1970s, reviews exhibitions by his fellow artists Jeff Wall, Thomas Ruff and Felix Gonzalez-Torres, compares the approaches of Allan Sekula and Chris Burden, comments on his own work and writes about many other artists and cultural phenomena.
