The project starts from a poem by Costantino Nivola, wishing to be a plant, an olive or a pomegranate, able to stay still and motionless in a courtyard of the Campidano, a garden in Baronia, a vineyard in Dorgali. Three of Italy’s most significant emerging photographers, Valeria Cherchi, Paolo Ciregia and Vittorio Mortarotti, developed it, curated by Antonella Camarda and Giangavino Pazzola and winner of the Strategia Fotografia 2020 call. In the relation between crisis and transformation, stasis proved inevitable and terribly necessary: Sardinia, with its remoteness and presumed separateness, became a metaphor for a universal condition. The book gives the result of the research, with contributions from scholars of different fields.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
