The fourth volume of the Quaderni Fotografici series of the Intesa Sanpaolo Historical Archive is devoted to the photographs taken in Europe and Peru between 1930 and 1948 by Antonello Gerbi, head of the Research Office of the Banca Commerciale Italiana, forced into a long exile from autumn 1938 by the racial laws of the Fascist regime. The images retrace the forced move to the South American country, the exploration of Lima and of many regions of rugged geography, giving a vision of Peru marked by a sure sense of history, close attention to socio-economic conditions and palpable empathy for a population of marked ethnic and cultural pluralism. A selection from more than 20,000 shots donated by the family to the archive.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
