Published for the exhibition curated by Aldo Grasso at the Gallerie d’Italia in Milan, part of the Cultural Olympics programme, the book draws on the extraordinary heritage of the Publifoto archive, seven million photographs acquired by Intesa Sanpaolo in 2015 and entrusted to the Group’s Historical Archive in Turin. Its pictures show workers during the 1956 Winter Olympics, the monumental construction of the ski jump and the ice rink, signs for the stadiums and race routes, Sophia Loren as patron of the games, all the equipment of the press room and the physical presence of television.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
